Expat influx posing threat to Gulf existence
The influx of foreign workers into the Gulf is a threat to existence, said senior Bahraini Minister when speaking during a conference in Abu Dhabi.
Dr Majeed Al Alawi, the Labour Minister, when speaking during the 15th annual conference of the Emirates Center for Strategic Studies and Research, which focuses on the education and labour market, said that the GCC employs about 17million foreigners, and there are more than one million unemployed citizens.
Dr. Al Alawi, who works on the labour reforms in Bahrain, said that although 50 percent of the projects in the region have come to a halt due to the slowdown, the number of foreign workers have not dropped at the same pace.
However, this is not accompanied by a decline in the number of foreign workers. The foreign workforce entering the region for a project or so, do not actually leave the region, he pointed out, while adding that this is posing a threat to the Gulf, and this will be a real threat in the future, if not now.
