Light rail network to ease traffic congestion in Bahrain
Bahrain will begin work on light rail network by 2011 to ease traffic congestions caused by increase in number of vehicles.
The Director of Road Planning at Works Ministry, Huda Fakhro, said that there is an annual growth in number of vehicles, touching 9 percent this year, from 5 percent in 2002.
In a recommendation to build light rail network, she said it was approved by the cabinet early this year. The first phase of the project was due to be ready by 2014, while the second phase will begin in 2016 and third phase will start in 2023 and end by 2030.
Fakhro also said that the main reason behind rapid rise in vehicle numbers were cheap car prices in Bahrain, and the low fuel prices and reduction in customs tariff from 20 percent to 5 percent.
